Pool volume calculator

Find out how many gallons your pool holds. Pick the shape, enter the measurements in feet, and the answer updates as you type.

Same depth all over? Leave blank.

An estimate from your measurements. Steps, benches and curved floors change the real number by a few percent.

How it works

Volume is surface area times average depth. Area depends on shape: length x width for a rectangle, pi x radius squared for a round pool, pi/4 x length x width for an oval, and 0.45 x (wide end + narrow end) x length for a kidney.

Average depth is halfway between the shallow and deep end. Cubic feet times 7.48 gives gallons, rounded to the nearest 10.

Questions

How do I measure the average depth?

Measure the shallow end and the deep end, add them and divide by two. That works for a pool with a steady slope. If the deep end is a short hopper, measure in a few spots and average those instead.

Why does pool volume matter?

Every chemical dose is based on gallons. If the volume is off by 20%, every dose of chlorine, acid and salt is off by 20% too.

How accurate is the kidney shape formula?

It uses the common 0.45 x (wide end + narrow end) x length approximation. It is close for typical kidney pools; for odd freeform shapes, split the pool into rectangles and circles and add them up.

How many gallons are in a cubic foot?

7.48 gallons. The calculator multiplies the surface area in square feet by the average depth in feet, then by 7.48.
